It is hard to distinguish an event focused mainly on linen cloth from among European contests connected with the artistic textiles. This theory was produced by the unquestioned authorities of the Artistic Linen Cloth Biennial – the late lamented prof. Ewa Huml who was artistic patron of the Biennial until 2015 and prof. Ewa Maria Poradowska-Werszler, who is the artistic supervisor of the event.
The main principle of Rules of this competition is that the artworks must be created minimum in 75% from linen cloth (in any form – it can be fibre, yarn or textile). Another rule is that the artworks’ size must be between 25 and 60 cm. An essential feature of the Artistic Linen Cloth Biennial artworks is that they can be all described as “chamber textile”, because they are able to adjust to the spaces most natural for the human, and, being eligible by linen’s characteristic nature and its unquestioned beauty, they do this naturally.
An important advantage of the Biennial is ability for young artists to make their debut. The aim of the DEBUTIES competition, which has been organised for a few last editions of the Artistic Linen Cloth Biennial, is to organise the individual exhibition of the winner’s artworks, presenting all the techniques he/she uses in his/her oeuvre, as well as promotion of his artworks.
The International Artistic Linen Cloth Biennial became very popular and it was highly commended not only by artists, but also by art critics. It was noticed by artistic communities working with cloth, but most important was the fact that it became high-ranking competition. The best proof is representatives of many countries taking part in the Biennial such as: Austria, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Island, Japan, Canada, Latvia, Germany, Russia, Scotland, Switzerland, Slovakia, Sweden, Turkey, Ukraine, the USA, Hungary and Italy. We would like to emphasize that International Artistic Linen Cloth Biennial is the only event of this kind in the whole Subcarpathian region. Thanks to its status and long-standing popularity it is lastingly incorporated into the list of European events connected with artistic weaving. The exhibition premiere of the 9th International Artistic Linen Cloth Biennial has been incorporated in the series of events connected with 15th International Textile Triennial 2016 in Łódź, Poland.
